THE GAME

WHAT IS CROWN GREEN BOWLING?

Crown Green Bowls is a competitive outdoor game in which a ball (known as a bowl) is rolled toward a smaller stationary ball, called a jack. The object is to roll one’s bowls so that they come to rest nearer to the jack than those of an opponent; this is sometimes achieved by knocking aside an opponent’s bowl or the jack.

The surface this game is played on is called the green which is usually grass but can also be artificial grass too. The green is a square area with a gradually raised crown, or hump, in the centre of the green.

THE LAWS OF THE GAME

The game is usually played by two players, each player having two bowls. The object of the game is to get one or both bowls nearer to the jack than either of the opponents’ bowls. The bowls are delivered alternatively until each player has delivered both bowls. The first bowler to reach 21 points is the winner.

The jack, then, is delivered first, and there after the players deliver their bowls to the jack. The right to deliver the jack belongs to the player who won the preceding end; the right to deliver the first jack is decided by the spin of a coin.

There are a number of laws that relate to crown green bowling so here a useful source all about the laws of crown green bowling.
